Tiny Tents
6"x6"x6"
2017
Summer camp seemed like the perfect place to try out this project! I worked with campers to design and produce 1/12 scale tents.
First, the campers had to measure and cut the tent pieces out of ripstop nylon. Next, they chose colored ribbon for their tent pole sleeves and pinned them into place. I then guided each camper as they sewed their tents together on the sewing machine. Galvanized steel wire was then cut and inserted into the tent pole sleeves to give each tent its shape. The tent flap was then rolled and hand sewn in place. Several campers went the extra mile and created items to complete their miniature camping experience. Keeping in scale, they crafted everything from tiny sleeping bags and books to miniature marshmallows and hot dogs for roasting! To punctuate our experiment in scale, the finished tents were then brought outside so that the campers could photograph them in a way that made the tents look life sized.
