For this lesson, students looked at the work of Monet, specifically, his water lily paintings. They described colors used in the lily pads and lilies and were able to recognize three characteristics of an impressionist painting. Next, the students used the wet on wet technique to paint their water. They then added salt to mimic light reflecting off the water. Students cut squares of colored paper for their lily pads, to mimic Monet's quick brushstrokes. Students created a pink painting and used sponges in quick strokes with orange paint to give their painting texture. After tracing and cutting out their petals, the entire piece was assembled and the petals folded up to bring the water lily to life.
