Matisse Inspired Cut Outs
Fifth Grade 2020
For this artist inspired lesson, students were introduced to the work of Matisse and organic versus geometric shapes. Using a gameboard filled with different Matisse shapes and a single die, students "rolled" six different shapes. They drew the shapes onto six different colored construction papers and cut them out. After discussing what makes a good composition, students arranged their shapes on black construction paper and glued them down.
