Egyptian Faience Hippos
4th Grade
2019
For this lesson, students reviewed color, shape, and line and were introduced to form. They then learned about William the Hippo, the unofficial mascot of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a group, the class then sculpted their own hippos out of clay, using William as the reference. Students were read the book, "The Little Hippo" and then wrote their own short stories about their hippo. Next, students painted their hippo's blue and used the short story they wrote to inspire the expression on their hippo's face and the design on their hippo's side.
