Steampunk Wonder Woman and Queen Hippolyta
2017
Steampunk Wonder Woman took second place in the Steampunk World's Fair costume contest. Both costumes have bracelets and head pieces made from Worbla, a thermoplastic material. The pattern is first made out of craft foam and then traced onto the Worbla. The Worbla pieces are then cut out. The Worbla is heated with a heat gun and the craft foam is sandwiched between two peices. The Worbla is heated again to finish the edges. The fillagree pattern is traced onto the Worbla and the piece heated again in order to shape it to fit the body. Two layers of Worbla are then heated and pressed together and thin strips cut from it. These strips are then heated and applied to the fillagree pattern traced on the bracelets and head pieces. The Worbla is sanded and sealed with glue before being painted. The bracelets and headpieces all have LEDs with all the wiring hidden between layers of Worbla. Each piece has a switch to turn the LEDs on and off. Each bracelet took around six hours to construct. Wonder Woman's costume is made from 100% cotton with gold lame symbol and applique stars. Hippolyta's costume is made from different shades of gold satin. Hippolyta's belt is made with craft foam that has been textured to look like leather. The belt was then sealed with Plasti-Dip and painted with acrylics. Black acrylic paint was then wiped over the surface to give it an aged look and bring out the texture. The entire belt was then sprayed with clear spray paint to seal it.
